My wife and I recently became permanent residents (Green Card) of the US. We currently have longterm health insurance from Japan which covers individuals living abroad. Will this be considered minimum essential coverage or will we need to purchase separate health insurance? I understand the deadline is 2/15. Please let us know.

Answer

If you are US citizen living abroad then you are exempt form the requirement to obtain coverage. From what we can tell this applies to green card holders with coverage from abroad as well. However, we are failing to find an official IRS rule to back this up. Please contact HealthCare.Gov. If you get a straight answer we would love for you to come and post it here so everyone knows. We will search in the meantime.
