How Do I Afford Insurance on Minimum Wage?
23 year old grandson working part time making minimum wage. How can he possible afford medical insurance? What does he need to do?
Answer
HealthCare.Gov has options for free or low cost coverage to people meeting eligibility guidelines for income. If he makes at least $11,670 he qualifies for cost assistance, if he makes less he is eligible for Medicaid if his state expanded. This assumes he is not claimed as a dependent. If he is, assistance is based on the filers income.

Cost assistance is BS for 11k a year. I have trouble paying my car payment and insurance every month already and now I get taxxed cause I can’t afford health insurance???? This is stupid and I can’t believethat the United States is doing this to their own citizens
You mean it’s BS making 11k a year? I know a few people in that income level and they get amazing coverage for something like $20 a month with really great out-of-pocket assistance. Others just under that level get free coverage through Medicaid. Hmmm? What is it you mean?
YES NOT IN FLORIDA WE DON’T HAVE MEDICAID EXP…
OUR GOV. SCOTT DON’T WANT IT. BUT PROBABLY HE IS GETTING A VERY GOOD HEALTH COVERAGE.
Not in fla no expanded madicaid remember thats scott
LOW COST????? BS. I just went to the market place. I make 8.00 an hour and my monthly premiums are going to be over 500.00. I get paid every 2 weeks and I don’t even bring home that much. Obama screwed US. I am single and 500 a month for insurance is ridiculous. How can anyone afford to pay their rent and utilities? SO we MUST have insurance but we have to be homeless to do it???? where is the logic in that??? I am so mad right now I can’t see strait
I like how there’s zero actual help for this question for people that can’t get Medicaid in their area. It’s America. Unless you make bank you’re screwed.
In states that expanded Medicaid, Medicaid is the answer. If you make over 100% of the poverty level, the marketplace is an opinion for low cost (after assistance) coverage. If your employer offers coverage, then it could be affordable (depends on your situation).
Those would be the answers. However, in some cases people will find that none of those apply to them. In cases like that there is a lack of help (although local charities and catastrophic coverage may be an option).
