If someone with no insurance has no income and doesn’t need to file, but their spouse is working and has to file does the person with no income still have to pay a penalty?

Answer

The penalty for not having coverage is based on your "tax family" and "coverage family". Those who file together must all have coverage, get exemptions, or pay the fee based on household income for every month a member goes without one of these.

I was court ordered to pay my child’s insurance.I am on my new wife’s plan through her employer. My new wife can’t afford the huge increase to add the step child. I am not working due to health issues, why do we have to consider my wife’s income if she can’t afford to cover my son?
