Do you have to meet a certain income in order to be required to purchase health insurance? I am a low income family of 3. I receive Medicaid for our son, but my husband and I are not insured for health and can not afford to pay for it, will I be penalized for being low income? Will I have to pay fines for not enrolling by February if I can not afford it?

Answer

Cost assistance is based on income, Medicaid depends upon if your state expanded. Check the Federal Poverty Guidelines to find out if you qualify. You almost certainly do.

Every family is different but in general cost assistance is offered to anyone making 100%-400% of the Federal Poverty Level. So do check the chart in the link above for a complete breakdown of incomes that qualify you for cost assistance, including assistance through Medicaid and CHIP.
