My 18 year old grandson is covered under his mothers insurance. He has a job and the company told him if he didn’t get their insurance he would be fined under the Obamacare Act. What does he need to tell them?

Answer

No one has to take employer coverage. But if you have access to affordable employer coverage you can't get cost assistance on the Marketplace. The employer owes a fee if the employee gets marketplace cost assistance, but the employee (or in the case the tax filer for the dependent) may owe back tax credits starting the month that employer coverage is offered.

In short he should either work under 30 hours a week (thus the employer doesn't have to offer coverage) or he should join the employer health plan.
