Are Breastfeeding Benefits Covered Under ObamaCare?
Are breast pumps, and other types of breastfeeding support covered under ObamaCare?
Answer
All health insurance plans must cover the cost of a breast pump (as a rental or a new one) and provide breastfeeding support, counseling, and equipment for the duration of breastfeeding.
This doesn't mean all breastfeeding benefits will be covered without cost sharing, so double check with your plan before getting a specific breastfeeding or maternity service.
Your plan may have guidelines on whether the covered pump is manual or electric, how long the coverage of a rented pump lasts, and when they’ll provide the pump (before or after you have the baby).
You should check with your doctor which one is right for you. In some cases your insurer will take doctor recommendations (and sometimes you'll need prior authorization).
