Temporary Coverage That Counts As Minimum Essential Coverage?
Hello,
I need health insurance coverage for the month of May only (my new job will sponsor my insurance starting June 1) but I want to make sure I have “minimum essential coverage,” which the “Short Term Health Insurance” plan doesn’t seem to meet. Is it possible to get only temporary health insurance, for one month, until I am covered by my work’s plan, while still meeting the minimum coverage requirements? Most plans seem to be long term, while I only need temporary coverage.
Answer
If you need temporary coverage, but want minimum essential coverage that can protect you from the fee, go with a Marketplace plan. You can start and end Marketplace plans whenever (as long as you enroll during open enrollment or via special enrollment.) You can also get short term and simply claim a short coverage gap exemption.
