When Do Young Adults Have to Get Their Own Health Insurance Coverage?
My daughter is currently covered under my insurance until she turns 26 in July. Does she need to sign up by Feb 15 for coverage, or can she sign up in July when she turns 26?
Answer
Young adults who age off of their parents' health insurance qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. By applying on the Health Insurance Marketplace, your daughter will be able to enroll from 60 days following losing her current coverage. Her new coverage will then take effect on the first day of the month after she enrolls.
