Would a 30 year old dependent who has no income still qualify for the no tax return exemption? As far as the marketplace is concerned this person is lumped in with the household income. Is this also the case with the automatic exemption? If a 30 year old dependent still qualifies for this exemption how does one fill out the tax form? The options on tax forms do not include this exemption in the check boxes.

Answer

If someone is claimed as a dependent then they don't qualify for the exemption for "income below the tax filing threshold". Affordability is based on household income. For them to be exempt under that exemption you can't claim them as a dependent. Try looking at other exemption options on our complete exemptions list for 2014. There are lots of options, but the income exemption won't work in this case.
