I lost my job in Aug. of 2014 and lost my insurance then as well. How long do you have to get insurance before I have to pay a penalty on my taxes.

Answer

A person is allowed a 3 months coverage gap each year. Those months must be in a row.

When you lose your job you qualify for a 60 day special enrollment period. Most hardship exemptions stack and can be used to go more than 3 months without coverage, but you should always double check with the Marketplace when you file an application for the exemption in question. If you aren't filing for it, then stick to the 3 month coverage gap (it's one of the few you don't have to apply for or prove).
