I work for the state of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and I have health insurance under my wife’s employer currently. My employer is telling me since I receive full employer contribution, I need to have health insurance through them. Why can’t I waive coverage from my employer when I already have health insurance?

Answer

You do not have to accept health insurance from your employer. You may decline an offer for affordable, job-based health insurance, but doing so will make you ineligible for federal subsidies and cost assistance on the marketplace.
