ObamaCare, Is Maternity Leave Covered?
I am a young, single mother. I have a full time job, but I am paid hourly, so I do not have maternity leave. I just found out that I am 6 weeks pregnant with my second child. Will Obamacare allow me to take time off with my baby and to help cover the out of pocket expenses?
Answer
ObamaCare covers maternity care as an essential benefit, but there is no provision in ObamaCare that affects Maternity leave.
So you can get a Marketplace plan with cost assistance (if your income qualifies you). This is only true if you don't have access to employer insurance. If you do, then you won't be able to get cost assistance.
According to Wikipedia: Current United States maternity leave policy is directed by the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) which includes a provision mandating 12 weeks of unpaid leave annually for mothers of newborn or newly adopted children. This policy is distinct to other industrialized countries for its relative scarcity of benefits, in terms of the short length of protected maternity leave and not offering some form of wage compensation for the leave of absence
