How do I Get Coverage for Children of Young Adults Under 26?
My son who is 23 is covered on our insurance policy and his girlfriend who is 21 is covered on her fathers policy so, their two children are left in limbo. They purchase insurance for them that costs $248.00 a month and has an $8,000 deductible. They can not afford it but it is all we can find for children only. What do we do? How are others doing this?
Answer
The children may qualify for CHIP depending upon the income of your son and his girlfriend. Options are dependent upon their income, and if you are claiming their children as dependents. If you claim them, then you are in charge of supplying coverage and the fee. If their income is low and your income is high, you could take them off the plan and they could use the Marketplace or Medicaid for coverage. However, Medicaid eligibility depends upon the state.
