Applying for Medicaid, Do I Owe the Fee?
I am waiting on approval for Indiana HIP, i don’t qualify for Medicaid even though every site keeps telling me to apply. I am 2 hours from the deadline, will I be charged that fee on my taxes if Im not approved and i’m waiting?
Answer
Applying for Medicaid, in most cases, will give you extra time to enroll. Here are the scenarios:
- You applied in a state that didn't expand Medicaid and you got rejected. You qualify for an exemption from the fee and catastrophic coverage. Must apply for this exemption at HealthCare.Gov.
- You were told that you qualified for Medicaid, but didn't. You qualify for a Special Enrollment Period at HealthCare.Gov.
- You were told you didn't qualify for Medicaid, but did. You qualify for a Special Enrollment Period at HealthCare.Gov.
- Essentially if you miss the deadline due to bad information, had some sort of application error, or mistakingly didn't get cost assistance on a private plan, or got a private plan instead of Medicaid inside or outside the Marketplace, you'll have options for Special Enrollment and exemptions.
The only way you can go wrong is by not following up. Also note, all the same applies for CHIP.
