Open Enrollment 2023 Has Ended in Most States – But there May Be Options

Open Enrollment 2023 ended on Jan 15, 2023, in most states. In a few states like Rhode Island, enrollment is extended. If your state still has enrollment open, you can enroll via your state’s health insurance website.

If your state has ended enrollment and you still aren’t covered, you may be able to qualify for special enrollment based on life circumstances or Medicaid/CHIP. If you don’t qualify for any of those, the next best option is generally looking into short-term health coverage, which can cover you anywhere from 60 days to one year.

States With Extended Deadlines in 2023

States with extended enrollment:

  • California: November 1st, 2022, through January 31st, 2023 (renewals start October 1st).
  • District of Columbia: November 1st, 2022, through January 31st, 2023 (uninsured can enroll anytime due to COVID public health emergency).
  • Massachusetts: November 1st, 2022, through January 23st, 2023.
  • New Jersey: November 1st, 2022, through January 31st, 2023.
  • New York: November 16th, 2022,  through January 31st, 2023 (residents can enroll anytime due to COVID public health emergency).
  • Rhode Island: November 1st, 2022, through January 31st, 2023.

NOTE: Although we don’t know of any other extensions, sometimes people are given last-minute extensions, and sometimes states will expand their deadlines, and we won’t catch the announcement. So it doesn’t hurt to check to see if you can still enroll!
